The actor has finally spoken out after the death of his former “Baywatch” co-star, Michael Newman, who died at the age of 68.
Michael Newman passed away on Sunday, but the news was only reported on Tuesday. David Hasselhoff, who worked closely with Newman on the popular show, shared a heartfelt tribute. Newman played an important part in “Baywatch,” both in front of the camera and behind the scenes.
Hasselhoff’s words reflected the deep connection they shared, and his tribute highlighted the impact Newman had on the show and everyone who worked with him.
The 72-year-old actor spoke fondly of Michael Newman’s bravery and skills, sharing that Newman saved his life “at least 4 times” during filming. He recalled how Newman performed stunts effortlessly, like transferring from a scarab to jet skis with precision.
Hasselhoff described Newman, who “was never afraid of the water,” as a key part of the “Baywatch” team. “He became a great actor. We will all miss him,” Hasselhoff concluded.
Newman passed away on October 20, 2024, due to heart complications. He had been battling Parkinson’s disease since 2006. His close friend, Matt Felker, confirmed Newman was surrounded by family and friends in his final moments.
Felker shared a touching tribute on social media, recalling their last encounter. With his signature humor, Newman said, “You’re just in time.” Felker described how Newman squeezed his hand, gave a nod, and was reassured they would meet again. Sadly, days later, Newman was gone. Felker ended his tribute with, “Thanks for coming into my life Newmie, even if it was a brief time.”
Born in Los Angeles, Newman gained fame in the ’90s as the only real lifeguard on “Baywatch,” playing Mike “Newmie” Newman in 150 episodes from 1989 to 2001.
He appeared in more episodes than anyone except David Hasselhoff. While filming, Newman also worked full-time as a firefighter and retired after 25 years of service. In recent years, he focused on raising money for Parkinson’s research through the Michael J. Fox Foundation.
In an August interview, Newman shared his hope that his story would raise awareness about the need for a cure. Reflecting on his diagnosis, he said, “This terminal disease has given me a lot of time to think, which I didn’t want, but it’s given me wisdom.”
After his death, fans around the world shared their grief and admiration on social media. One fan wrote, “Nooooo!😭 RIP Newmie. You were a true hero & warrior,” while another said, “He fought that disease hard and lived his life the best he could. 💔”
Many remembered his role on “Baywatch,” with one user saying, “Newmie was one of the best characters!” Newman is survived by his wife of 36 years, Sarah, their two children, Chris and Emily, and a granddaughter, Charlie.
Before his diagnosis, Newman had planned to retire in Hawaii with Sarah, where they built their dream home near the “Baywatch: Hawaii” filming location. His passing follows that of John Ashton from “Beverly Hills Cop.”
