In 2024, Doherty’s publicist announced the heartbreaking news that the actress had died. “It is with a heavy heart that I confirm the passing of actress Shannen Doherty. On Saturday, July 13, she lost her battle with cancer after many years of fighting the disease,” a statement revealed.

Doherty was born in Memphis, Tennessee, and moved to southern California when she was six. The star was determined to act from a young age and persuaded her parents to take her to an audition.

At 10, Doherty landed her first television role in the drama “Father Murphy.” This early break launched a career that made her a household name. Her rapid rise to fame also brought financial independence, and in her early 20s, the actress purchased her first home in Malibu.

Doherty reflected on this early 1990s milestone on her podcast, “Let’s Be Clear with Shannen Doherty.” “I purchased a house and then ran out of money and couldn’t afford it. One of the only smart things I did back then,” she said. Doherty moved frequently throughout her career, buying and renting homes.

One of her earliest purchases came in 2004 when she bought a two-story Malibu home for $2.56 million. The big spend came during her time on “Charmed,” where the actress played one of the witchy Halliwell sisters.

Doherty later listed her Malibu home for $4 million in 2009. The property, built in 1976, featured 5 bedrooms, 4 and a 1/2 bathrooms, and spanned 3,410 square feet.

The home was nestled over an acre of landscaped grounds, offering ocean views, mature trees, a swimming pool, a spa, and a spacious patio. Doherty initially listed the house in April 2005 for $4.4 million but later withdrew it from the market.

At the time, the actress intended to spend more time in New York, according to her listing agent. The house did not sell; however, the setback did not deter Doherty from continuing her search for the perfect home.

Shannen Doherty’s 2018 Battle to Save Her Home

In 2018, Doherty found herself fighting for her home while battling cancer. Her California house was close to the Woolsey Fire and sustained significant smoke damage. The actress often shared glimpses of her beautiful California home on social media. The stunning property featured crip white walls and narrow hallways.

The “Charmed” star’s West Coast oasis had beautiful wooden floors and showcased Doherty’s unique taste in home décor. The house was furnished with bold and rich pieces, such as a green mirror with gold detailing.

Other social media posts revealed the gorgeous wide staircase in Doherty’s California home. The property also featured vast windows, allowing for tons of natural light.

Although her home did not burn down like many others in the area, the smoke and ash that infiltrated the property caused considerable damage. This was particularly concerning given her compromised health due to cancer.

“I’d rather people hear it from me. I don’t want it to be twisted. I don’t want it to be a court document. I want it to be real and authentic,” Doherty explained when she decided to publicly reveal her ongoing cancer battle, which was likely to emerge during her legal proceedings.

“And I want to control the narrative. I want people to know from me. I just didn’t want them to know yet,”she added. Following the wildfire, Doherty sued her insurance company, State Farm.

The actress claimed the insurer unjustly refused to cover the full extent of the damages to her home. This forced the actress to pay out of pocket for losses she believed should have been covered under her policy.

“If it’s this hard for somebody who’s got money and a certain amount of power, imagine how hard it is for just a regular person [..],” said Amy Bach, the executive director of a nonprofit organization that advocated for people dealing with insurance companies after disasters.

During the legal battle, the “Charmed” star and her then-husband temporarily relocated to a rental home in Venice, California. In 2021, a federal jury in Los Angeles delivered a verdict in favor of Doherty, awarding her $6.3 million.

The “Charmed” star confessed to having multiple storage units filled with unused antique items. However, as the cancer spread through her body, Doherty had to face the possibility of dying. This meant that she would leave her mother with a lot of her late daughter’s stuff.

As a result, although Doherty was hopeful she would recover, revealing during an Instagram clip of her podcast that she was undergoing chemo, the actress also began preparing for death.

Doherty started packing up her home to downsize, selling and donating her cherished items. “So, I was packing up and I started crying because […] I felt like I was giving up on a dream. What did that mean for me?” she confessed.

Doherty’s dream extended beyond her immediate home. On her podcast, she spoke of her plans to build a home, extend a barn, and turn the land into a haven for horses. Doherty loved horses. In fact, in January 2024, the actress collaborated with Return to Freedom, a wild horse conservation organization, in an Instagram post that advocated for wild horses.

Doherty wanted to “rescue all these horses that are abandoned by their owners because they’re too old, or they get broken down because they work them too hard.” However, she sadly never got to see her dream come true.

One of Shannen Doherty’s final wishes was to be cremated, not buried. “I want to be mixed with my dog and I want to be mixed with my dad,” she added. Doherty died surrounded by her dog and loved ones, but lives on in the loving memory of her devoted fans.
