On the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings yesterday, The Duke of Kent unveiled a statue to commemorate the Royal Warwickshire Regiment’s involvement in the day. 500 men from the regiment were dropped by parachute in Normandy on D-Day, successfully drawing the attention of German units away from the beaches. 154 soldiers from the regiment were killed and wounded the following day in the first battle for Lebisey.
