The 52-year-old Hall of Famer Michael Strahan and his “Fox NFL Sunday” team were at the San Diego Naval Base on November 10, 2024, to honor Veterans Day.

The Fox Sports team took part in a special broadcast at Naval Base San Diego as part of their yearly tradition of honoring the U.S. Armed Forces. This event happens every year during Veterans Day weekend to show respect for the dedication and sacrifices of the men and women who served the country.
Fox broadcasted the event, where the “Fox NFL Sunday” team stood with many uniformed service members as the national anthem played.
Six of the men around Michael Strahan placed their hands over their hearts during “The Star-Spangled Banner.” However, Strahan had his arms folded in front of him, which led to a social media backlash.
Viewers were upset with Strahan’s gesture, finding it disrespectful to the anthem and the military, especially during a broadcast meant to honor veterans.
One person asked, “Why didn’t Michael Strahan put his hand over his heart during the National Anthem?” Another called his action “Disgusting! Disrespectful!”
A fan tagged Strahan directly, writing, “@michaelstrahan Disrespectful. You should be ashamed.” Another added, “Fire @michaelstrahan! So disrespectful!!” Some even demanded he be fired, asking why he didn’t follow the usual gesture during the anthem.
However, some people defended him, saying, “Why can’t people mind their business? He’s standing respectfully.” Another pointed out, “The hand over heart is for the Pledge of Allegiance, not required for the Anthem if you’re standing quietly.”
During flag ceremonies like the anthem, people are expected to show respect. Those in uniform give a military salute, while veterans may also salute even if not in uniform.
Civilians, like Strahan, are expected to stand at attention, facing the flag, with their right hand over their heart. If wearing a hat, they should remove it and hold it over their heart.
Strahan stood respectfully, which fits general decorum for civilians. However, some viewers expected the traditional hand-over-heart gesture.
Despite the criticism, Strahan showed his support for veterans on his Instagram page after the event. He posted, “Thank you to all veterans and active service members who risk their lives daily to protect us. Your service is beyond measure,” along with a picture of his father.
Strahan shared that his father, Maj. Gene W. Strahan, Sr., served for 23 years in the US Army and was part of the 82nd Airborne Division.
He added, “I honor my father and think of all of you daily. We wouldn’t have our safety and freedoms without you. Thank You,” highlighting his deep respect for their sacrifices.
